Enjoy Belize while making a positive contribution with your time at Belize Botanic Gardens by becoming a BBG volunteer or intern.
Volunteers of all ages and walks of life have helped us at Belize Botanic Gardens. While we are happy to consider any applicant we are especially looking for volunteers with skills in the following areas:
We accept internships at the garden for students who require related work experience to complete their degree. If you would like to be an intern at Belize Botanic Gardens your degree should be in a topic relevant to the work we do here. Topics include but aren’t limited to: ethnobotany, botany, environmental science, environmental education or tropical ecology.
Interns generally help out with general garden maintenance as well as participating in a special project. Your project might involve computer work, basic manual labor, horticultural work or a little of each. We try to adapt your jobs to your personal experience and to our “need to get done” basis. Let us know your areas of skill and interest.
Although we ask that you work a regular week (Monday to Friday), on the weekends we encourage you to take advantage of the sites of Cayo, Belize. Thanks to BBG’s main supporter duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge, you can join certain scheduled excursions to destinations around the district at no or little cost. You may also be able to use canoes when available or join scheduled horseback tours. Best of all the Macal River borders the garden and there is a lovely beach on the river – a perfect spot for a swim and a rest.
We are in a remote location, so consider bringing a friend.
To join the program we require two work (volunteers) or education (interns) related references. These can be sent by post or email. (If by post please mail to: Belize Botanic Gardens, P.O. Box 180, San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize). The cost for the program is $350USD per month which includes basic accommodation – a 2 bedroom apartment with a bathroom, living area, laundry room and kitchen – or you can pay $550US a month if you want food included and we will provide you with groceries. A 10% deposit is required to confirm your stay with us.
Many volunteers want to know why we charge for the volunteer program since they will be working with us. Unfortunately, with a very limited staff and many projects going on, we are stretched thinly at the best of times. We are happy to have the help and appreciate your work, but it does mean more staff hours to co-ordinate volunteers. We also need to take care of feeding and boarding you and since we already run the garden on a shoestring budget, every dollar counts. We feel the garden is an important project and hope that you agree. You can feel good about your contribution as all of the money from the volunteer program goes directly into running costs of the garden.
To be accepted as a volunteer or intern you must be at 25 years of age (exceptions can be made, if you are a mature person that has traveled before). Volunteers must speak either English or Spanish fluently. It is helpful if you have traveled to the tropics before or are an experienced traveler.
Volunteers should ensure they have adequate health/accident insurance, including Medivac, flashlight, towel, proper hiking shoes, lightweight rain gear, swimsuit, at least one pair of long pants, clothing for warm weather, insect repellent, sunscreen and sun hat.
The first step to applying for a volunteer position at Belize Botanic Gardens is to fill out our on-line volunteer application form. Once we recieve the form we will get back to you and go from there.
